'Very disturbing': What to know about the potentially deadly fungus spreading in the U.S. The fungus called Candida Auris (or C. Auris for short), was first detected in the United States in 2016, but is now spreading at an "alarming" rate, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned this week. Doctors are assuring the public that it’s not going to take over the world and kill us all, but it is something we need to be aware of. Rapidly spreading fungus presents ‘urgent’ threat, CDC warns “It’s something we’ve been tracking for probably 10 years,” said infectious disease specialist Dr. Michelle Barron.Between 2019 and 2021, clinical cases of Candida auris tripled. The fungus has now been reported in 28 states, according to the CDC.“The fact that it’s increasing in number and also increasing in terms of where we can find it is kind of a combination that’s very disturbing,” said Dr. Bruce Hirsch at Northwell Health in New York. Candida auris is so concerning because it is often resistant to anti-fungal drugs, making it hard to treat infections. It can also be ha...

Decluttering your home: A minimalist shares 7 ways to live with less How much is enough? In a world of hoarders and minimalists, where do you fall on the continuum, and where would you like to fall?I’ll tell you, if a hoarder is a 10 and a minimalist is a one, I’m a 3.5. I’d like to be a three. I don’t like clutter. But I do like my stuff — my collections, my clothes, my books, my jewelry, my dishes — much of it, some could argue,  unnecessary. I don’t want to live an austere life, but I do want to live a well-edited life. And purging our excesses, my friends, like eating right and exercising, takes discipline.Stuff — mine and yours — has been on my mind since I spoke last week with former “Hoarders” host Matt Paxton. We talked about what makes hoarders hoard and about the other extreme, minimalism, which he’s learned to embrace since merging households with minimalist Zoë Kim.Curious about what drives minimalists to whittle their belongings to the essentials, I got Kim on the phone. Payton, who hasn’t played since Feb. 8, has been ramping up his on-court activities in recent weeks. He joined the team on its recent five-city road trip and was spotted doing individual strength and conditioning work.Coach Steve Kerr said Wednesday that Payton has been “doing well,” and the team hoped he’d be back on the court “before too long.” Payton will practice Saturday without restrictions, the team said. Depending on how Payton’s body responds to the workout Saturday, he could be good to go for Sunday’s game against the Minn...

BART passenger’s death: Report details dragging by dog’s leash The dimness of BART’s Powell Street station was cited by investigators into the dragging death of a passenger after a train car’s doors closed on her dog’s leash.Though surveillance video confirmed the operator performed the required “look-back procedure” before the train left the San Francisco station, he did not see the passenger struggling with the railcar doors 611 feet behind him, said the report issued Feb. 28 by the National Transportation Safety Board. In the incident on Sept. 13, 2021, a 41-year-old San Francisco woman suffered fatal injuries when she was dragged along the platform and hit the gate at its end.The woman and her leashed dog had boarded the ninth of 10 cars of a Dublin-bound train at 3:13 p.m. The leash was clipped to her backpack. The woman then stepped back out of the car — witnesses said she was apparently waving to someone on the platform — and the dog remained inside. When the doors closed on the leash and the train...
