Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:32:17 GMT

SEMINOLE, Florida (WFTS) — Returning to the parking lot of Second Time Around Consignment in Seminole, Travis DuPont couldn’t help but get chills.“I’m like right here talking to the guy and then reaching in and pulling him out,” he explained, gesturing to where he was standing just a little more than a day later. “I’m just thankful that I got him out of there just in time. If I was any earlier, I would have missed him. If I was any later, you know, he might have not been here,” he said.Earlier Sunday morning, right before 3:30, as DuPont was driving home from work, he saw a flash and a pop in the distance.“I turned my radio off my car immediately. Republican chief gambles on Biden impeachment probe as shutdown looms

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:32:17 GMT

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy used a 4-minute Tuesday statement to plunge the House GOP toward an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. But he won’t know until Wednesday if he’s won over his toughest audience: his own members. While announcing that he will move Republicans toward a formal impeachment probe, McCarthy also signaled that he’ll sidestep the biggest challenge he had faced — locking down a majority of Republican votes for one. In a U-turn from his previous pledge to require a vote on the floor, McCarthy said Tuesday that he would be “directing” committees to “to open a formal impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden.”A McCarthy spokesperson confirmed the GOP leader doesn’t plan to hold a vote to launch the impeachment inquiry: “Speaker announced an inquiry. The inquiry is now open.”What was left unsaid: It’s not clear that he has majority support for the very impeachment inquiry he told his members to open. That’s thanks to multiple GOP members, largely centrists, who are...

In her State of the Union, von der Leyen should swap pragmatism for principles

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:32:17 GMT

Sam van der Staak is the director for Europe at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.Today, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will deliver her fourth — and final — State of the European Union speech before next June’s elections. But instead of courting voters with a laundry list of promises, she should place upholding democratic values at the center of her address. When von der Leyen introduced her team in 2019, she termed it a “geopolitical Commission.” Dreaming of boosting the EU’s role on the world stage, she intended to wheel and deal with the world’s superpowers — be they good or bad — and pursue a policy of realpolitik to help the bloc survive in a world increasingly run by autocrats and populists. However, her Commission simultaneously launched its six priorities focused on promoting fundamental EU values, including defending democracy, protecting rule of law and supporting a rules-based global order. And this split vision has left...
