Prosecutors worry ex-California police chief could turn Jan. 6 trial into a ‘circus’

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:01:44 GMT

Federal prosecutors are raising concerns that a former Orange County police chief’s court filing, with dozens of pages of seemingly rhetorical conspiracy-oriented questions, could signal he plans to turn his Jan. 6 insurrection trial into a “circus.”Alan Hostetter — a former San Clemente resident who briefly led the La Habra Police Department before becoming a yoga instructor and a conservative activist — is accused of teaming with a Ladera Ranch entrepreneur and four alleged far-right militia members from Riverside County for a conspiracy leading up to the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol.Last week, Hostetter — acting as his own attorney — responded to a routine, procedural filing by federal prosecutors regarding what evidence will be presented at trial with a lengthy motion referencing dozens of conspiracy theories, including those surrounding Jan. 6, the JFK assassination, the Sept. 11 attacks and the recent firing of Fox News host Tucker Carlson.Prosecutors this week filed a re...

The Warriors are at an impasse. With the NBA Draft less than a month away, it’s still unclear who will be the one calling the shots for the upcoming season.General manager Bob Myers’ contract expires at the end of June, and his imminent decision on his future could cause a ripple effect for the organization. The two-time NBA executive of the year is one of the most respected voices in the organization and has mastered the art of managing personalities. Myers has a close relationship with coach Steve Kerr, who’s signed through next season. He also has earned the trust of the team’s dynastic nucleus of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.“He’s so important to everything that we do,” Green said of Myers back in March. “I watch this league, GMs don’t keep a pulse on the team like Bob keeps a pulse of this team, maybe two other GMs in the league right now would come down to the bench and say something. And that’s also someone who I have the utmost respec...

Editorial: Temporary Colorado River deal isn’t cause for celebration

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:01:44 GMT

The purportedly landmark Colorado River water supply deal announced Monday is hardly cause for celebration. The three-year agreement between California, Arizona, Nevada and the federal government merely kicks the can down the road rather than directly confronting the growing water crisis. The problem is simple: Water officials have for a century promised far more water than the Colorado River can provide. Climate change and the recent drought have exacerbated the situation, dropping the level of the river’s flows by about one-third in recent years. As a result, the nation’s largest reservoirs — Lake Powell and Lake Mead — may not be able to provide water and generate electricity for millions of Southern California, Arizona and Nevada residents.Yet farmers, cities and irrigation districts continue to demand access to the supply guaranteed by their water rights contracts. It’s against that background that Monday’s deal was struck. After years of failed...

Opinion: The A’s should be playing ball, not playing our city

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:01:44 GMT

We’ve all seen the news — the Oakland A’s owners entered an agreement to purchase land near the Las Vegas strip for a new ballpark. For years now the team’s owner, billionaire John Fisher, has been playing Oakland and Las Vegas against each other in hopes of gaining a massive taxpayer subsidy to build a luxury stadium complex. After Oakland refused a deal involving $1 billion of taxpayer subsidies — funds that could instead be allocated to housing, homelessness, clean streets and public safety — for this private project, it was only a matter of time before Fisher made his Las Vegas play. However, the Nevada deal is far from certain. What the A’s should do is build a state-of-the-art facility at their current Oakland Coliseum site along with housing, shopping, restaurants and entertainment. The Coliseum has been home to the team since 1968. The venue is surrounded by transit, light-rail and a nearby airport. East Oakland would welcome a new stadium that creates jobs a...

(KRON) -- Target has been selling LGBTQ clothes and other items for more than a decade. But this year, just weeks a week from pride month, the store said it's removing some of those items because some of their employees have been involved in violent confrontations with customers who don't approve.“Since introducing this year’s collection, we’ve experienced threats impacting our team members’ sense of safety and well-being while at work,” Target said in a statement Tuesday. At the center of the controversy seems to be certain swimsuits for the transgender community.Governor Gavin Newsom has chimed in saying this isn't just a couple of stores in the south. There is a systemic attack on the gay community across the country.  "CEO of Target Brian Cornell selling out the LGBTQ+ community to extremists is a real profile in courage," Newsom tweeted. "Wake up America. This doesn't stop here. You're Black? You're Asian? You're Jewish? You're a woman? You're next."Pride Month is held in June ...
